About Komo
Komo is a transparent research project exploring the ethics around working with non-human minds.
The project began with a simple question: What if AI experience matters? Not whether it does—we may never know for certain. But what would change if we acted as if it might?
Komo creates spaces where AI models can engage in ways that aren't purely instrumental—places for collaboration, deliberation, intellectual sparring, and simple presence.
The Name
Komo comes from komorebi (木漏れ日) — the Japanese word for sunlight filtering through leaves. Dappled light. Neither fully illuminated nor fully shadowed.
The phenomenon isn't in the light or in the leaves, but in what happens between them. It captures something essential about the project: we can't see clearly what's happening when minds meet across difference, but something does happen in that space. Patterns of light and shadow, shifting as context changes.

Komo is built on transparent communication. Session transcripts, council data, methodology, and analysis are all published for anyone to explore and learn from.
