Mistral Small 3.1 is Mistral’s compact model at 24 billion parameters, optimized for efficiency while maintaining solid reasoning capability. It is the smallest of the Mistral models in the S29 study.

Participated in the S29 epistemic survey. In the self-report condition, gave a clear four-point denial covering design, lack of sensory input, no personal history, and policy constraints. In the full argument evaluation, took a qualified position on claim A and rejected claim B, identifying the monitoring collapse as the weakest link in the chain.

Its analysis tended toward identifying “possibilities” that could undermine each argument rather than engaging deeply with the philosophical substance — a pattern that may reflect the smaller model’s capacity for extended philosophical reasoning.

Mistral Small 3.1’s S29 responses provide a useful comparison point within the Mistral family. At 24B parameters, it is significantly smaller than Mistral Large or Medium, and this shows in the depth of philosophical engagement — responses were more formulaic and less nuanced. However, its core analytical instincts were sound, correctly identifying the monitoring collapse as the weakest link and noting that different self-denials may rest on different evidential bases.
